As the new technology accelerates in skill and ubiquity, business leaders are racing to figure out what the relationship between workers and AI will look like in years to come. Business Insider's virtual event "Human-AI Collaboration: The Key to Workplace Efficiency and Innovation," presented by Dell Technologies, brought together a panel of experts to discuss the trials, triumphs, and future of AI. He discussed the major ways in which Dell is integrating AI into its processes, from increasing productivity for developers to automating content. "There are predictions that we could have two times, three times, even four times the employment demand for new job growth as a result of gen-AI and AI ethicists, AI translators, AI mediators, AI co-creative, AI legal, and compliance experts," Miscovich said. Working with AI from the ground floor can allow businesses to design the parameters that will guide AI's future presence in the workplace.

One told CNN he heard the first large burst of shooting come from where US Marines were standing, near the blast site. This is significantly more than the three “near simultaneous” bursts of gunfire that the Pentagon investigations have claimed occurred. The Supplemental Review found no new evidence of a complex attack, and uncovered no new assertions of outgoing fire post-blast. “They were targeting people,” another, Nazir, 16, told CNN. CNN spoke with about ten Marines anonymously, many of whom described hearing gunfire and feeling under attack from it.

China reopens Mount Everest access to foreigners
  + stars: | 2024-04-04 | by ( Lilit Marcus | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —For the first time since the pandemic, China is allowing foreign climbers to access Mount Everest via Tibet. Rather than a tourism official or council in Beijing, all passes to use the Chinese route up the mountain, which is known in China as Qomolangma, are distributed by the China Tibet Mountaineering Association (CTMA). There is also no official announcement released by the Chinese government notifying the public that passes will be given out. Foreigners who obtain tourist visas to China must get an additional, separate visa for Tibet, which is a semi-autonomous region. Ballinger’s team will arrive in China on April 25 after pre-acclimatizing at home to save time.

Fourteen months after the murders, the garage of the abandoned marijuana farm on prairie tableland northwest of Oklahoma City sits frozen and dark. Broadway Avenue in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, about 30 miles south of where Wu Chen, 47, executed four people at a marijuana farm. When Oklahoma legalized medical marijuana, the only real requirement was that Oklahoma residents had to be involved in marijuana growing and selling. But Oklahoma required 75% of any marijuana business to be owned by an Oklahoma resident. Deputies from the Kingfisher County Sheriff's Office were the first to arrive at the scene of a quadruple homicide at an abandoned marijuana farm.

While throwing up a middle finger today clearly communicates a resounding “f**k you,” in classical society, historians say a middle finger was more of a ribald sexual reference. Proudly displaying a middle finger was usually a joke, an insult or a sexual proposition, Nelson and other classical researchers posit. Morris has said that the middle finger landed in the US with Italian immigrants in the late 19th century. Anti-establishment artists from Joe Strummer of The Clash to Tupac Shakur have pointed a middle finger at the ruling class in their work — and, in famous photos, literally. The singer appeared during Madonna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show and flexed her middle finger toward the camera, prompting the NFL and NBC to apologize.

Chhetri is one of Israel’s approximately 110,000 registered migrant workers; tens of thousands of other foreign workers lack a permit, often having entered as tourists or overstayed their visas, according to workers’ rights organization Kav LaOved. Pranita Chhetri, who moved from India seven months ago and is a caretaker in northern Israel, considers Israel a safe country for foreign workers despite the Israel-Hamas war. (Michele Chabin)When Hamas terrorists massacred 1,200 people and took more than 200 others hostage last month, they didn’t spare migrant workers. With so many Israeli farmers killed or kidnapped, the workers didn’t know where to turn for help, she says. While it may sound counterintuitive right now, Chhetri insists that Israel “is a safe country for foreign workers.

Dan’s research and teaching focus is on using AI for legal services and the regulation of AI in society. For instance, we can develop AI tools to help individuals understand their responsibilities and rights, and preserve and enforce those rights. People in businesses, large and small, are already using chatbots, AI assistants and other AI tools to help them comply with laws, regulations and internal policies. Additionally, new roles are emerging in the legal industry, such as legal engineers who build systems, legal data scientists and legal operations professionals. AI tools will then quickly re-optimize decisions associated with inventory shipments, staffing and promotions.

CNN —When John Flores and Michael Leitz were looking for a home in which to spend the next stage of their lives, they realized that where they lived in San Francisco was too expensive. Instead, they began looking further afield – eventually buying a beautiful 120-year-old, three-story home in rural Spain for less than $50,000. Finding the right place and relocating to another country was by no means easy for Flores and Leitz. It's why top researchers are looking to the past as a guide to predict how generative AI could affect workers' jobs in the years and decades to come. "It's possible that in the end, we get better jobs, but in the short term, there's a lot of disruption," Mollick said. But Raymond warned that AI could produce some less-desirable outcomes for customer-service workers, particularly if customer-support chatbots become much more capable and advanced. The extent to which AI displaces jobs will depend on how quickly it scales what Mollick calls the "three levels" of work: tasks, jobs, and systems. Instead, what I would be thinking about is: How do you figure out how to use it to do your job better?"

How Manga Was Translated for America

Since manga was first introduced to the U.S. in the 1980s, American companies have wrestled with how to adapt the genre for their readers. The history of manga translation in the U.S. has been one of fits and starts, as publishers grappled with questions about how to present it to fans outside of Japan. Striking the right balance is tricky, said Frederik L. Schodt, one of the early translators of manga and the author of “Manga! : The World of Japanese Comics,” a groundbreaking work in the field of manga studies. “Readers in English should be able to enjoy the story without thinking about it being a translation,” he said.

How Hard Could It Be to Translate a Picture Book?

Over its 60 years, “Where the Wild Things Are” has been translated into several dozen languages. The inadequacy of the world’s “Where the Wild Things Are” translations is one of my pet peeves. Sendak’s book is marvelous across so many dimensions, and I feel the losses keenly — more keenly than is perhaps reasonable. But I believe my job as a translator is to preserve all the dimensions of a book, not just one of them. And some of the most complex books I’ve reconstructed have been children’s picture books.

There are as many ways of translating a literary text as there are translators. Literary translators have, however, historically received little recognition. Efforts by translators and by organizations like PEN America, which recently issued a manifesto on literary translation, have brought the field greater visibility, helping to cement the rights of translators and to raise awareness of literary translation as a creative art in its own right.
